Maths Performance Task - Personal Reflection

(1)Role of Statistics in Real Life
Statistics refers to the collection, interpretation and organization of data.It is used in planning for surveys and experiments. There are two different types of data, continuous and categorical. Examples of quantitative(countable) data is height and weight while qualitative(categorical) data are data like gender. Different ways of summarizing data include pie chart, histogram, bar chart, frequency table and stem-and-leaf diagram. I learnt data can be summarized by mean, median, mode and they can be split in ranges of numbers eg.12-22. An easier way of doing graphs and preventing careless mistakes is tallying. Frequency is how often a thing occurs eg. If a car comes three times, the frequency is 3. Statistics is used in planning for surveys and experiments. If a company is looking to invest in a product, he can see a pie chart which classifies the preference of the people after a survey and hence invest in that product to reap maximum profits. I noticed my family's usage of electricity, water and gas are charted in the utilities bill. I think it is the government’s way of trying to reduce expenditure on utilities. Eg. If someone spent too much on their utilities, the bill will go up and the graph will slope upwards which is telling others they are spending more and more unnecessary money. Statistics can be used in our daily life. It is most of the time used in science. In different experiments. Every change in variable a  new statistical graph can be made. It is mostly used in physics as physics is very much alike to math which statistics is categorized under. Statistics is mostly used to get different hypothesis. It can be used to counter others points. Eg. The newspapers say that the Singapore Bus Service (SBS) Buses arrive very punctually and a graph was made in our performance task and personally I do not think it can be considered as very punctual as a few buses now and then are late by a very long period of time. In newspapers there are a lot of results tables for different types of sports such as basketball, cricket and most importantly soccer. It is written in the finance section, the different shares and stocks, lowest price, highest price, average price etc. There is also a weather section where they show the average temperature, highest and lowest temperature and it also states the weather condition whether sunny or rainy. A market summary is also in the straits times in a form of a line graph.
(2)Learning Experience
We all did the work on Kashyap’s computer and discussed how something should be done or not example the format of the graph. My role was calculating the numbers and putting them in the table as my mental calculation was supposedly the best in the group. We did not know how to make the charts at first.. Most of the problems were technical. If I had another project like this I would try to think of the format first before doing not thinking on the spot.
